Finally, an article about SSL "VPN"s

August 2003 - Tunnel Visions ... How do SSL VPNs match up with their older IPSec cousins?

Good grief. I suspected as much, but this article finally confirms it. SSL "VPN"s, are in fact, not VPNs at all. Instead, they are targeted towards encrypting/protecting applications at a time. Obviously "intranet" sites (including webmail) are ideally suited for this (because it become a glorified proxy), but apparently, they can also give you access to Terminal Services (or Citrix, or whatever) sessions, etc. via an applet.

It just doesn't seem like it's so much a "solution" as a bunch of thrown together whatnot.

Still, for allowing remote users to get to intranet sites, or their shared or user drives on the fileserver, it's not really that bad.
