Another method for putting Debian on a Soekris

Running Debian on Soekris Engineering Embedded Systems

This document describes how to load Debian GNU/Linux on the Soekris net45xx embedded systems. Why Debian? Becuase its easy to adminisister, easy to add new packages and easy to update existing packages. Not to mention its free!.

We start by booting the system off the network and mounting its root filesystem over NFS. From there you can format the CompactFlash, load a root filesystem on it and run lilo so that it will boot directly from the CF disk.

Reboot.com file for rebooting from the dos prompt

WinDrivers Computer Tech Support Forums

Start DEBUG by typing the following at the MS-DOS command prompt: debug

At the dash prompt, enter the following sequence of commands, each followed by pressing ENTER. (Comments are preceded by ";".)
A 100 ; Debug instruction for assemble
MOV AH,0D ; Disk Reset
INT 21h ; causes SmartDrv 4.x to write cache
MOV AX, 40 ; set up segment addressing
MOV DS, AX
DS:
OR BYTE PTR [17],0C ; equivalent of pressing CTRL ALT
MOV AX,4F53 ; Issue a "DEL" (53h = DEL scan code)
INT 15h ; EMM386 sees this & shuts down
DS:
MOV WORD PTR [72],1234 ; Set REBOOT flag to Warm-Boot (0=cold)
JMP F000:FFF0 ; Execute the internal restart routine
; This line must be blank (just hit ENTER)
R CX
20 ; File size to be written to disk (in hex)
N REBOOT.COM ; Filename
W ; Write the file to disk
Q ; Quit Debug

NOTE: The REBOOT.COM file created with this debug script is compatible with SMARTDrive and its write-behind cache feature. The instructions in REBOOT.COM cause SMARTDrive to write (flush) its write-behind cache to disk before the computer is rebooted.

This procedure creates the file REBOOT.COM in the current directory. At this point, you can call the file in the same manner as any other executable file, either from the command line or within a batch file, and the system will reboot

Austin found this Windows wallpaper generator

Sysinternals Freeware - Utilities for Windows NT and Windows 2000 - BgInfo

If you manage multiple computers you probably need BGInfo. It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop's background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more.

I knew I had seen this before, and I couldn't think where it was. Nor could I find it, even by harnessing the power of Google. Thanks, Austin.

LVM2 may now support snapshots?

LWN: Kernel release status

It is an absolute delight to see snapshot support for device-mapper finally going in to the stable kernel.

I had to upgrade my company's core server to 2.6 fairly early on to solve
some serious disk I/O scheduling problems, and discovered that LVM2 not
only lacked snapshot support, but that this lack was undocumented. Even
better, LVM2 broke rather badly if the admin unwittingly tried to use the
snapshot feature - in my case, forcing a SERVER REBOOT in production time
to restore the logical volumes to a usable state.

With this support in the kernel, my mail spool backups will be safe
again :-) . More importantly, LVM2 will be (at least from my perspective)
back up to the functionality of LVM1.

It sounds like LVM2 will be able to do snapshot volumes soon.

Best Yerba Mate that I've found

EcoTeas Unsmoked Organic Yerba Mate

We offer unsmoked, organic yerba mate at fair prices. We also offer traditional yerba mate accessories.

The unsmoked makes a huge difference. Also, it doesn't clog the bombilla the way other, more powdery mate can.
