I was getting this error from VMware:
Failed to create DirectInput device: HRESULT(0x80040154: sev 1 fac 4 code 340):
Unknown error 340 (0x154).
Failed to initialize mouse-keyboard-screen control.
Apparently, the problem is that VMWare won't run without a mouse on the host. *blink*
