Milky Way Cake Recipe (Traditional birthday cake for me and my brother)

This wonderful cake is rich and moist. Keep refrigerated.

  • 0.5 lb. Butter
  • 6-8 Milky Way bars (regular size)
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 2.5 cups flour
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1.25 cups buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Melt butter and candy bars. Bars should be totally soft. (Microwave works well.) Beat in sugar. Then beat in eggs. (I use an electric mixer.) Sift flour, salt and baking soda together; add alternately to candy bar mixture with buttermilk. Mix in remaining ingredients. Pour into 3, 9-inch metal cake pans. (I cut wax paper circles and place in the bottom of the pans, then grease and flour the wax paper surface.) Bake at 325 degrees for 35-45 minutes. Test center with toothpick. When it comes out fairly clean (with only a few crumbs), it's done. Cool on racks. When cooled somewhat, you can tip over on to rack and remove wax paper. You can frost while slightly warm or completely cooled.

Milky Way Frosting

  • 1.5 tablespoon milk
  • 1.5 teaspoon vanilla
  • 4.5 Milky Way bars
  • 1.5 stick butter
  • 1.5 cup confectioners' sugar (powdered)

Melt candy bars and butter together over low heat or microwave. Add milk and vanilla. Add sugar. Mix until of spreading consistency. I use an electric mixer or you can use a wire whisk to work out the sugar lumps.
